Purified from fresh citrated bovine plasma using a combination of salt precipitations and column chromatography. Protein purity is determined by SDS-PAGE and shows total reduction upon incubation with 2-mercaptoethanol. Protein C is activated to gthe serine protease, Activated Protein C (APC), by a-thrombin or the complex of a-thrombin/Thrombomodulin. This Activated Protein C is a potent anticoagulant through the selective inactivation of Factor Va and Factor VIIIa.
